Dr. Akbar Khan

Dr. Akbar Khan is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine (1992). He completed his certification in Family Medicine in 1994. At the start of his career, Dr. Khan worked as an addiction consultant and research supervisor at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto (now called the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health). Dr. Khan has also been actively involved in pain and symptom management for cancer patients since completion of his medical training.
Through this work he developed an interested in cancer treatment and improvement of quality of life. In 2006, Dr. Khan, co-founded Medicor Cancer Centres, the first integrated private cancer clinic of its kind in Canada. Since 2007, Dr. Khan has gained international recognition for his work with off-label drugs in cancer treatment. Dr. Khan was the first in the world to demonstrate the curative potential of dichloroacetate when used as an adjuvant to radiotherapy or chemotherapy and the first in the world to publish on the benefits of intravenous dichloroacetate for cancer treatment.
In the last 3 years, innovative cancer prevention strategies have been added at Medicor, with a focus on vitamin D, natural medicines, nutrition and smoking alternative e-cigarettes. Dr. Khan regularly publishes cancer papers in various peer-reviewed medical journals. He has been regularly invited to present lectures on various topics in complementary cancer therapy and pain and symptom management since 2000.
A thirty-one-year-old female contacted our clinic for assistance. She had been recently diagnosed with the deadliest form of brain cancer, glioblastoma. This type of cancer carries an average prognosis of survival for a little over one year, even with all the best therapies, conventional medicine has to offer (surgery plus chemo plus radiation). Clearly, she understood the odds were not in her favour and decided to look beyond what was offered by her cancer specialists.
